The director stated in the behind the scenes: "I specifically wanted to use James Earl Jones in this part because I had a sense that he is the American father figure, he was the most trusted man in America. He was the most righteous man. I really wanted a sense that Jack Ryan's boss was the best boss you could have, and that he was absolutely trustworthy." I think he nailed it.
