I wanted to keep the shapes of the palace strongly graphic and architectural rather than too organic so that it would stand out in the landscape. The openings in the roof allow for unique light and shadows to be cast on the walkways of the palace as well as framing opportunities looking up. The roof helps maintain the top heavy look of Arrakis. The thopter landing areas would be on the roof.
