Lunar Mining Rock Asset

Substance Painter viewport turnaround.

Raw Zbrush sculpt with UVs -
In zbrush I created the initial forms, then carved out broken piece and the interior and made sure the seems were as hidden as possible by going back and forth to boolean and clean the seems.

Refs: Because of the polycount requirements (see description) We needed to go a bit less granular on the detail even though we were getting close to the asset. This meant going with simpler geometry shapes and relying more on texture and normal details.

Cinematic R&D production

Lunar Mining Rock Asset

The two biggest challenges for this asset were:
1. A piece needed to break off during the initial mining action and expose an interior cavern like a geode. The geode assets were created separately, but we needed to have a large enough cavern inside the rock to fit the camera along the hero crystal.
2. The asset needed to be animatable for some of the production needs. At the time you couldn't make a nanite mesh an SKM so we needed to keep the polycount of the final asset lower. The break-off piece also needed to be able to be shattered by our VFX team.

This was developed as part of a larger cinematic R&D Project.
